A collection of Castleton State College students, faculty and administration totaling 100 or so took part in an informational forum on campus safety Tuesday.

A rather even mix of men and women joined at Casella Theater in a response to two separate allegations of sexual assault on campus in the past couple of weeks.

CSC president Dave Wolk greeted the crowd and thanked everyone for attending. He then emphasized the role of Castleton as an academic institution.

"Our job is to educate and protect," Wolk said.

Greg Stone, dean of students, followed and said that there was no reason to believe that the two alleged assaults were connected.

"We have good reason to believe they occurred," Stone said. "One of the victims said directly to me that it happened and where it happened."

According to Gary Boutin, an investigator for both the Castleton and Fair Haven police departments, the victims have the absolute right not to file a report and the police respect that.

Police have not received a report from either alleged victim.

"Both reported victims made it perfectly clear that they do not want the police involved," Boutin said.

Boutin is currently scanning the Castleton area for any registered sex offenders so he can provide that information to Wolk.

If anyone has information that can help the investigation, Castleton Police ask that you call them at 468-5012.
